Thanks to the achievements of selection, it is not difficult to grow strawberries even in harsh Siberia; the main thing is not to make a mistake in the variety of varieties. The fruiting period, yield and resistance to weather changes should be taken into account. You will learn all this later in the article.
Strawberry variety selection criteria for Siberian conditions
The main parameters when choosing the ideal strawberry variety for Siberia include the following:
- a high degree of frost resistance of plants both in the winter months and in the spring period of frosts;
- quick regeneration of the green part of the bush in case of damage from the cold or insects;
- yield and duration of fruiting;
- resistance of berries to rot;
- taste of the crop;
- plant resistance to pests.
Next, we consider the types of strawberries that are in demand in Siberian latitudes.
Zoned
The following grades are most popular among summer residents.
Fairy
Mid-season high-yielding variety (up to 189 kg / ha) obtained at the Kuybyshevsky Zonal Gardening Experimental Station as a result of crossing the “Scarlet Sail” and “Hope”. In the first harvest, the berries are large, up to 35 g, after which the average weight varies between 10-15 g. They are dark red, round, have no neck, with a dense texture. Suitable for industrial use.
Strawberries are good for whole jam by maintaining shape during heat treatment. A clear minus is the low tolerance of transportation.
Slightly spreading bushes are characterized by good adaptation and resistance to diseases and pests. Maintain high yields without transplants and rejuvenation for 3 years.
Festival
Strawberry, which is deservedly considered one of the best. Was withdrawn at the All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture named after I.V. Michurin. The characteristics of the Festival Strawberry are as follows: large (up to 30 g) red-burgundy conical berries with a slight roundness and characteristic grooves have a pleasant fresh aroma with a hint of musk.
Ripening peaks in the first weeks of July. The variety is excellently stored for several days and is easy to transport, maintaining its presentation. The yield of 180 kg / ha allows you to both enjoy the berries in season and harvest them for the winter using freezing and preservation.
Plants with a powerful outlet are famous for their winter hardiness, drought tolerance and high regeneration after damage. Excellent resistance to fungal diseases makes them even more attractive, but the variety is inferior in its susceptibility to powdery mildew.
Mascot
A variety of wild strawberries of garden English origin with an average yield of 100 c / ha. The juiciness and sweetness of the round-cylindrical berries with dense light red pulp is emphasized by the most delicate aroma. Strawberries are large enough - usually from 20 g. Universal - good and immediately from the garden, and for processing.
The variety is semi-permanent, which makes it possible to harvest a second crop in the fall under favorable weather conditions. The removal of leaves after the first fruiting has a positive effect on this. Varietal qualities are especially pronounced only in the first 2 years of planting.
The bushes are healthy, strong, with many fruitful shoots, endure long frosts without consequences. They are susceptible to ticks and nematodes, but resistant to powdery mildew and fungal infections, including gray rot.
Lviv early
An early dessert variety with excellent yield (reaches 200 kg / ha), bred at the Lviv experimental gardening station. The brilliant fruits of a bright red hue have a conical shape with a noticeable neck, medium in size. They are juicy, with a dense texture and very fragrant, sweetness is accompanied by a slight acidity.
The first collection - up to 25 g, the next about 10 g. Mostly consumed fresh, but can also be used for conservation.
Medium-sized plants are unpretentious to any type of soil, adapt well to various weather conditions, and are not cold-resistant enough. It is recommended to cover the beds with heat-preserving material, a regular spruce branch is also suitable. Strawberry ticks are poorly tolerated, but the rest of the pests and diseases are not afraid of them.
Idun
A universal strawberry bred by Danish breeders especially for difficult climatic regions. Not picky about the soil, but loves abundant watering during the flowering and ripening season. The first round-shaped fruits can be tasted in the second half of May.
Berries with juicy airy flesh are slightly flattened laterally, taste sweet with a sour tint. Loose structure does not allow long-term storage or transportation of crops.
Strong and tall bushes are compact and resistant to disease, the number of outlets is average, with high peduncles. The danger to the crop is only gray rot. The undeniable advantage of the variety is the high regenerative ability of the green part of the plant.
Omsk early
A popular species obtained at the Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture as a result of the crossing of "Iduna" and "Novelties." Red berries of a stupid conical shape are medium-sized, up to 10 g, have an unsurpassed taste, very sweet. They are famous for their high content of vitamin C. The first harvest is possible in May, bears fruit throughout the warm season. During processing, the rich, vibrant taste is enhanced.
Compact plants with low peduncles are well leafy, are not afraid of freezing temperatures and are resistant to diseases and pests.
Repair
Repairability is the ability of plants to bear fruit several times in one season.
Such types of berry crops require close attention of gardeners. The most suitable conditions for Siberian open spaces include the following.
Queen Elizabeth II
Strawberry Elizabeth 2 is one of the latest innovations. Pronounced repairing properties allow you to enjoy ripe berries from June to October. Bright red fruits are quite large, some reach 80-100 g! High density pulp is optimal for transporting the crop without loss of quality and appearance.
"Queen Elizabeth II" shows an amazing resistance to cold and disease, not inferior to traditional zoned varieties. Over time, strawberries become smaller, so it is recommended to renew strawberry planting every 1-2 years.
Lord
Mid-early variety with high productivity (192 c / ha). The first berries appear in early July. They are massive (50-70 g), juicy and aromatic. The second wave of the crop ripens in late summer, and although the size of the fruits is inferior to the July wave, this does not affect taste.
Strawberry "Lord" does not require laborious care, is not afraid of low temperatures and diseases. It is distinguished by good adaptability to weather conditions, prefers lighted places and additional watering. It is universal in use, it is considered one of the commercially viable.
Honey
An early variety comes from the United States, you can try it already in May. When organizing closed plantings (greenhouse, agrofiber), the crop matures several weeks earlier. Large fruits with a slight acidity and a weight of 30-40 g have a red-orange pulp of medium density with a characteristic aroma. The second wave of the crop ripens at the end of the summer season.
Compact shrubs with a strong developed rhizome are finicky to high humidity, but they withstand winter cold and are resistant to typical berry misfortunes. Strong peduncles easily support the weight of ripened berries.
Other varieties suitable for Siberia
The most popular strawberry varieties for Siberia were considered above. But the variety is great, and we offer to get acquainted with other types of berries that can easily get along on the site of the Siberian gardener.
