Volga ribbon pigeons are attractive birds that have won the sympathy of not only pigeon breeders, but also those who can appreciate the quality of this breed. Birds are often bred for decorative purposes - pigeons become a decoration of the yard.
Historic Pigeon Data
Russian breeders managed to breed a young breed in the early 20th century. For crossing used Volga red-breasted, Rzhevsky and winged pigeons. These birds are always recognized, because they have a striking appearance.
Most of the ribbon pigeons formed in the cities of the middle Volga, due to which it was called “Volga”. Due to the fact that many local breeds with a pattern like "magpie" prevailed in blue, they accordingly called them "red-chested".
Population size and genotype assessment
The census of the breed was not carried out. Volga pigeons are bred on the territory of such countries:

- Bulgaria;
- Russia;
- Hungary;
- Holland;
- Poland;
- Belarus;
- Switzerland;
- Kazakhstan;
- Ukraine;
- Lithuania.
The breed is numerous. The number of birds with red coloration is almost ten times higher than the number of individuals with yellow feathers. According to information from pedigree nurseries, the breed is homozygous. Each bird at birth has a stable pattern and shade.
What do Volga pigeons look like?
The size of the Volga ribbon pigeons is small. Birds are characterized by a stately build. Their distinguishing feature is a beautiful color range of plumage. The bird's head has a nut-like shape, flat crown, relatively wide forehead, rounded, steeply descending to the base of the beak.
Pigeons of this breed have dark, small eyes with narrow, smooth eyelids of a pale flesh tint. Volga birds - owners of a short, pointed, closed beak of a light pink hue. The head is located on a short, full, beautifully elongated neck. The chest of the birds is quite wide and convex, corresponding to a broad, but short back, sloping to the tail.
To recognize birds simply by hanging wings - they are slightly lowered below the tail, composed of fly feathers. The tail of pigeons is raised, wide and flat, usually it contains 12-16 feathers. The body is held on short legs with plumage. The shade of plumage on the shields corresponds to the main color. Feathers are cherry white, sometimes yellow-white. Pigeons have no belts.
Flight qualities
Only correct and regular training leads to the fact that the Volga tape pigeons begin to show their flying qualities. Excellent content conditions are just as important for good performance. Birds of this breed are able to show high flight characteristics of circular slow flight, the duration of which is 2-3 hours, sometimes more. They can climb a great height.
What is the color of the birds?
Volga pigeons are distinguished by a unique color scheme, prevailing with clear boundaries. The texture is saturated. Smooth and shiny. The plumage of the head, neck, back, chest, nadhvost and tail - cherry, occasionally yellow. The beak, cheeks, eyebrows, legs, belly, throat, wings - are distinguished by a white tint.
A distinctive feature is a white stripe on the tail. The width of such a strip is one or two centimeters, it runs across the tail.
Features of keeping and breeding
The maintenance of this breed requires a pre-built spacious dovecote. It should be light and dry. There must be an aviary for walking. Since the Volga tape pigeons are clean birds, it is required to install a bathhouse in the dovecote. The bathroom should be compact so that it can be cleaned after the birds bathe.
The pigeon breeder needs to be regularly cleaned in the pigeon, the birds must be kept clean, and therefore the litter is changed regularly - this will avoid infection with various diseases.
Undemanding pigeons allows you to keep them in aviaries. It is permissible to equip the dovecote on the ground, on the wall of the house or in the attic. The area of the enclosure should be at least one and a half square meters. In the house, feeders and drinking bowls, nests, perches without perches should be installed.
Feeding Volga pigeons standard, their diet is 70-80% composed of grain. It is also necessary to introduce root crops, green grass, vitamins and minerals, and legumes into the diet.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of the Volga tape pigeons include their arrogant calm - birds behave calmly, quietly. In addition, pigeons are excellent parents, they have a well-developed sense of paternity - flawlessly hatching eggs and feeding chicks are characteristic.
To minor flaws include such factors:
- medium size, large, round, but proportional head;
- slight deviations from symmetrical coloring;
- sloping forehead, thick neck without narrowing, high chest;
- light red or light yellow, but saturated plumage;
- tail opening less than 90, but more than 60 degrees;
- the length of the legs is more than 3 but less than 4 cm.
Such gross flaws in birds are also distinguished:
- violation of the standard pattern, pale ribbon, lightening colors on the feathers of the tail;
- a large body, square or narrow head with yellow or different-colored eyes;
- dark legs, oval tail;
- eyelid yellow, red, pink;
- multi-core tail, tail with peeled feathers along the edge;
- tail opening angle less than 60 degrees;
- thin long beak, dark or perpendicular beak;
- long back;
- vertical neck, lack of shaking.
As for the reviews, the owners of this breed of pigeons consider the moment that the birds get used to the person too fast, require care and a regimen to care for them. Also a minus is that the pigeons will be able to show their flying qualities only after intensive, lengthy training.
